The indoor
sports hall of the Asaba Township Stadium witnessed a gathering of titans and
consummate personalities during the inauguration of 32 sporting associations in
Delta State.
Driven by
passion, Delta State has continued to champion a revolution in sports
development in Nigeria, a process that climaxed in the convocation of a summit
in October last year.
The Chairmen
and members of the inaugurated sports associations are expected to identify
talents with programmes put in place for their development, raise funds from
the private sector to organize adequate competitions and carry out
sensitization on fair and drug-free regime by athletes, among others.
Inaugurating
the sports associations, the Executive Chairman of the Delta state Sports
Commission, Mr. Amaju Melvin Pinnick, spoke glowingly about the rich pedigree,
strong corporate character and passion which informed the appointment of the
Chairmen and members of the sports associations.
Mr. Pinnick
admonished them to take sports to the next level in order to consolidate
DeltaState leadership position in Nigeria, especially in the National Sports
Festival. He further posited that through sports, the State can do well without
oil.
Responding
on behalf of the Chairmen of the sports association, Dr. Festus Okubor,
Chairman of Badminton Association, thanked the State Government for finding
them worthy of the appointment.
Dr. Okubor,
who is the Chief of Staff, Delta State Government House, promised on behalf of
his colleagues, to join hands with all stakeholders to achieve the Government
agenda of human capital development.
The Sports
Association Chairmen inaugurated yesterday include Hon. Victor Ochei, Speaker,
Delta State House of Assembly (Wrestling), Hon. Daniel Mayuku, Chairman House
Committee on Finance & Appropriation (Golf), Mr.Tony Obuh, Permanent Secretary,
Government House (Darts), Dr. Chris Oghenechovwe, Commissioner for Water
Resources (Kickboxing), Hon. Funkekeme Solomon, Commissioner for Works
(Squash), Architect (Barr) James Akporero (Table Tennis), Hon. (Mrs.) Pat
Ajudua (Baseball/Softball), Prof. Patrick Muoboghare, Commissioner for
Education, Basic & Secondary (Taekwondo), Engr. Dr. Pius Sinebe (MFR),
former PDP Chairman, Delta State (Handball), Hon. Barrister Raymos Guanah,
former Commissioner for Lands & Survey (Cycling), Hon. (Chief) Benjamin
Okiemute (Shooting), Engr. Santino Ozah (Boxing), Mr. Emmanuel Ochei
(Weightlifting), Dr. Henry Ofah, member of Desopadec, Delta Central (Scrabble),
Hon. Olatilewa Edwards (Basketball), Chief Chinonye Dafe (Swimming), Hon. Ochor
Ochor, Chairman transition committee, Ukwuani LGA (Hockey), and Hon. Solomon

include Dr. (Mrs.) Rukevwe Ugwumba (Sports Medicine), Mr. Gberimi Eyewuoma
(Volleyball), Dr. F.O. Thorpe (Special Sports), Mr. Paul Evuarherhe

Highlight of
the ceremony was the taking of a group photograph of the Sports Associations
Chairmen with the Executive Chairman and Members of the Delta State Sports
Commission.
