2015 GOVERNORSHIP: IT’S TIME FOR DELTA NORTH –OCHEI

Victor Onyekachi Ochei is the speaker of Delta State House of Assembly (DTHA). As part of activities marking the second anniversary of the fifth assembly, Ochei, a chemical engineer by training who has been in the business of law-making since 2003, spoke to Charles Okogene, on sundry issues in the state. Excerpts:
Can you assess the performance of Delta State House of Assembly under your speakership?
So far it has been satisfactory. As a presiding officer, I sit down to preside over the arguments either for or against and then rule, but in the past two years I have seen vibrancy, very robust arguments and deep thinking emanating from the floor. I have seen people become very conscious of their environment and things going on around them which have direct bearing on their constituents. I can tell you that a lot has improved on what we used to have in the house of assembly. In this fifth assembly, we have a crop of new entrants who are very willing and eager to learn. They buckle up very well and I can tell you that in my assessment from the plenary and other committee assignments, they have done well and we could not have wished for anything better than what we have now. Anything beyond this would have been excellent mark, but I don’t want to sound immodest. I want to remain with the fact that we have done well.

LIFE ENHANCING LEGISLATION IS OUR GOAL—DELTA SPEAKER

The Delta state Legislature have been urged to retrospect the out- going legislative year, as the spring board to fashioning out concrete ways through proper legislation and exercise of oversight function, which will be in synergy with other arms of government impact positively on the citizens.

Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon (Engr.) Victor Ochei gave this piece of advice, in his opening address of a two day retreat organised in Lagos for the Honourable members of the House, as part of activities marking the second anniversary of the Fifth Assembly of the Delta State House of Assembly.

OCHEI TASKS JOURNALISTS: REPORT FACTS, GET N1M

The need to reposition the media for greater challenges through veracious reportage, has been adduced as the decisive factor that informed his resolve to institute an annual one million naira prize for the best investigative journalist in Delta State, so says Rt Hon (Engr.) Victor Ochei, Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly.

The Speaker, who had earlier on during an interactive session with journalists as part of activities marking the Second Anniversary of the Fifth Assembly of the Delta State Legislature, challenged the media to eschew speculative journalism which according to him lacks the essentials for societal development.

2015: BETWEEN CLARK AND DELTA GUBER ASPIRANTS

It is becoming practically impossible for some Delta State politicians like the minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Elder Godsday Orubebe, and Speaker, Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Victor Ochei, to sleep with their two eyes closed.Reason? Chief Edwin Clark! The Ijaw leader has become a stumbling block to their ambitions. Kola Niyi-Eke narrates the drama playing out.
South South chieftain and Ijaw leader, Chief Edwin Clark is the perfect definition of a dogged fighter, who throws all to the ring if he chooses to fight. And since the return of democracy in 1999, he has managed to keep the smile on his face; at least on the long run. He indeed has been a stakeholder in Delta State and largely commands followership.

UDUAGHAN’S SUCCESSOR: WHOSE SACRIFICE WILL THE GODS ACCEPT?

Although, the year 2015 is still far away, glimmers of things to be expected before, during and after the governorship election have started rolling out in Delta State. No fewer than 12 contestants from across the three senatorial districts of the oil rich state are already jostling to succeed Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, who has not finished his tenure. DOMINIC ADEWOLE in Asaba, reports that the race may after all not be for any of the early risers as was proven with the election of Uduaghan in 2007.
Although, none of those who have shown interest has come up with a blueprint for the development of the state, faceless groups, corporate organisations, socio-political pressure groups, women affairs and community development associations, who have laid claim to the wind of positive change in the state, have started drumming support for their preferred aspirants.

STABILISING THE DELTA ASSEMBLY

Behind the much talked about rancour-free Delta State House of Assembly is the Speaker, Hon. Victor Ochie, who many now refer to as the stabiliser, writes Olawale Olaleye
His physiognomy can be intimidating. But when you get a little closer, the Speaker, Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Victor Ochei, is just as harmless as the words that proceed out of his mouth. Confident and self-effacing, Ochei also boasts such a trapping mien that even his political foes would concede so much to him.
Interestingly, unlike the ordinary, his physiognomy also corroborates his intellectual depth, understanding of Delta politics and terrain as well as the legislature where he holds court as speaker.

DELTA 2015: IT’S OKOWA VERSUS OCHEI IN PDP

In the last few weeks, several persons have been touted as the most likely successor to Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, in 2015. Out of the lot, two men stand out. Remi Adelowo reports

About two months ago, some major political stakeholders had gathered at the Isoko country home of the former Chairman of Guinness Plc, Chief Abel Ubeku, in Delta State, for a social cum thanksgiving service.
Present at the occasion included the Secretary to the Delta State Government, Comrade Ovuozorue Macaulay, the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Hon. Victor Ochei, to mention but a few.
As it is common with events of such nature, it soon turned political with the endorsement by a group named Isoko Development Union (IDU) of Ochei’s alleged 2015 governorship ambition.

LAWMAKERS WILL COMPLEMENT UDUAGHAN’S EFFORTS — SPEAKER

The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Labour, Dr Clement Iloh, made this known during a visit to Rt. Hon. Victor Ochei, Speaker of state House of Assembly in Asaba.
