The Delta state Legislature have been urged to retrospect
the out- going legislative year, as the spring board to fashioning out concrete
ways through proper legislation and exercise of oversight function, which will
be in synergy with other arms of government impact positively on the
citizens.
Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon
(Engr.) Victor Ochei gave this piece of advice, in his opening address of a two
day retreat organised in Lagos for the Honourable members of the House, as part
of activities marking the second anniversary of the Fifth Assembly of the Delta
State House of Assembly.
According to him, “the task of law making in a complex
state like ours (Delta), requires that we must take time from our ever busy law
making and exercise of oversight functions schedules, to occasionally look
back, with the sole aim of improving and also setting goals and agenda for
ourselves”
He said further that, the retreat will expectedly provide
the legislators with improved zeal in the new legislative year, in fashioning
out ways of surmounting the issues confronting the state, through informed
legislation aimed at further bringing legislative dividends to Deltans.
The Legislator also opined that, for the ideals of
democracy to be realised, the legislature needs to apply unrelenting and
concerted effort at ensuring enhanced standard of living, which prompted the
choice of Environmental Management as the theme of the retreat, bearing in mind
that Delta State is not insulated from the global problem of climate change.
Hon Ochei moreover revealed that, a critical analysis of
environmental issues in Delta State hinged on maximising expected gain which
will boost the state government’s mantra of Delta Beyond Oil.
