PHOTOS: OCHEI’S STRATEGY ON POVERTY ERADICATION

The government of Delta State is making efforts to tackle the problem of endemic poverty in the state through multiple approaches, chief of which is the empowerment of the less privileged in the society. Speaker Ochei arrives for the event
Speaker of Delta State House of Assembly, the Rt. Honourable Victor Onyekachi Ochei, perhaps taking a cue from the template of the state government’s Delta Micro Credit Programme (DMCP), empowered 1020 women at an event tagged: “Women Empowerment Programme of Aniocha North,” which held last week at Pilgrims Baptist Grammar School, Issele-Uku, Delta State.
According to the speaker, the gesture was to fulfill his campaign promises which he made to the women folk while seeking their support to return to the House of Assembly in 2011. Ochei said that the women had contributed to the success of his political journey since 2003, noting that they had shown consistency and reliability as evident in their significant role in his electoral victories through encouragement and support, even in the face of daunting opposition from his rivals.
He stated that the cash gifts given to the women was to enhance their socio-economic standard and help them to live more meaningful lives in the society, stressing that the choice of artisans, farmers, hairdressers and tailors plying their vocations at verifiable locations, was to key into the Human Capital Development Programme of the state government. He commended the government for using its popular micro-credit scheme to empower the rural poor as well as victims of urban squalor.
The Speaker further said the essence of the Delta Micro Credit Programme (DMCP) was to generate more wealth and to enhance massive growth in the economy. He said “When you empower women, you have empowered a whole nation,” Ochei stated, while making reference to Khedive Ismail Parshal, a former ruler of Egypt in the 19th century who once said that “When you train a woman, you train a whole nation.”Ochei expressed hope that the 1020 female beneficiaries would diligently invest the cash gifts in their occupations, which, he believed, would further raise a thousand nations in his constituency.
He appealed to the male folk and the youths not to feel abandoned, promising that a youth empowerment programme was forthcoming and prospective beneficiaries would be notified once the modalities were worked out.

The state governor, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, who attended the occasion, said his government gave every top functionary three months to empower their people. He said he preferred to see empowerment programmes going on across the state, reiterating that people should not rely on the state government alone for empowerment. Uduaghan noted that the empowerment should mostly dwell on the area of agriculture, encouraging Deltans to farming in order to reduce the problem of food scarcity in the state.
According to him, the government was doing its best to empower people so that they in turn could begin to feed themselves. He disclosed that the local government had empowered 619 groups, while 6265 persons had benefited in one way or the other and that DMCP had deployed not less than 121 million programmes in Aniocha North and same to other parts of the state. The governor emphasized that government would invest more on moving from micro credit scheme to Small Scale Entrepreneurship, so as to improve the growth of small scale business in the state. He thanked the people for their courage and asked them to join hands to support the state to move forward.

Delta State PDP Chairman, Barr. Peter Nwaoboshi

Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Delta State, Chief Peter Nwaoboshi, expressed happiness over the women empowerment programme which he saw as “giving back to the people what they gave to him.” The PDP chairman tasked all other members of the state House of Assembly to emulate the Speaker by going to their local governments to empower their people, adding that appointees of the state government should engage in human capital development.

The Commissioner, Ministry of Poverty Alleviation, Dr Antonia Ashiedu, who was also at the event, commended Hon. Ochei for his effort to set a pace for development in Aniocha North local Government Area. Dr Ashiedu, popularly called Mama Delta, said that her ministry had done a thorough sensitization and capacity building before carrying out some projects, noting that the Speaker had made an impact in empowering over 1,000 persons as well as bringing meaningful economic growth.
