GOVERNOR Emmanuel Uduaghan has given marching order to elected and appointed political office holders in the state to urgently initiate empowerment programmes in their wards and constituencies to complement government’s effort at alleviating the living standard of the people.
The governor gave the directive
when the Speaker of Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Victor Ochei doled
out N25.5 million empowerment scheme of N25, 000 each to 1,020 women of Aniocha
North Local Government Area and 50,000 branded exercise books to all the
students in public secondary schools in the area, held at Issele-Uku,
yesterday.
Uduaghan gave three months grace
to top government functionaries to go home and empower the people, saying, even
though all the roads and sectors are given facelift, without basic empowerment
programme to alleviate the living standard of the people, it will still be seen
that the state government has done nothing.
“The state government cannot do it
alone and one of the ways to fight hunger is for all the elected and political
office holders in the state to complement government’s effort by going to their
local government areas to empower their people”, Governor Uduaghan directed.
While flagging-off the empowerment
programme, he urged the women who are involved in trading to also focus on
agriculture being one of the major sources of revenue and employment
generation. He also advised them to judiciously use the money given them to
grow their businesses, adding that the state government has through the state
Micro-Credit Programme, piloted by the Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation,
Dr. Antonia Ashiedu, empowered 6,258 beneficiaries, totaling N121 million in
Aniocha North council area.
The Governor who was accompanied
by Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, civil commissioners and members of the State House of
Assembly led by the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Basil Ganagana, commended the
people of Aniocha North for their support for the party and the Speaker, Rt.
Hon Victor Ochei, for his promise to extend the empowerment programme to women
in the other constituencies of the 28 members of the Assembly as well as
deepening democracy through the empowerment programme to alleviate the living
standard of his constituents and the socio-economic development of the council
area.
Chief Peter Nwaoboshi, Chairman of
PDP in the State, also urged other 28 members of the State House of Assembly
and top government functionaries to emulate the exemplary disposition of Rt.
Hon Ochei to empower their constituents, saying their drive for political
positions will be judged by the dividends of democracy they extend to their
people.
Presenting his address, the
Speaker, Hon Victor Ochei, reminded the people of Aniocha North that his desire
to empower the women folk that engaged in artisan, farming, hairdressing, tailoring
and other trades was in fulfillment of the campaign promise he made to
the womenfolk while seeking for a return to the House for a third time in 2011.
He said the idea behind the
empowerment programme for the women was to empower their trades for them to
generate more wealth and develop the culture of saving, assuring the male folk
and the youths to be patient, saying their empowerment is on stream and
prospective beneficiaries will be notified.
