CHIKE OGEAH: FOR EQUITY, DELTA NORTH SHOULD PRODUCE GOVERNOR IN 2015

Question: The three senatorial districts of Delta South, Delta Central, and Delta North are contending for the right to produce the next governor of the state in 2015, and this is already causing tension among the people. Where do you think the next governor of the state should come from?
Answer: What I can tell you is that power is never given and power is not gratis. Nobody gives it to you free of charge. I don’t want to use the word fight, but you must show that you are, indeed, worthy of power. The second thing is that you must also show your negotiation skills with everybody else to let them understand that, indeed, these are the reasons why you want that power.  No matter how ridiculous an argument is, because this is democracy, everybody has their own way of thinking.
For instance, something I heard which I find extremely laughable, but some people believe it. They said the capital is in Delta North and that is permanent and  that, consequently, the rotation of power should be between Delta South and Delta Central.  That cannot be so. What I think is that, yes, an election is coming in 2015, it will raise the temperature of political activity,  both at state and national levels , and that is a lot of what we are seeing going on now. It is not peculiar to Delta. An administration is getting to its terminal date, a lot of people are already looking at the kind of people that they think will be in the succeeding administration. That is why they are referring to the outgoing administration as lame duck, there is a lot of schism in the political movement. That again will start happing more as we get towards 2015. But I think it behoves  us, my  people of Delta North, to now go on a major sensitisation campaign round the state.  Let our brothers from the South and Central know that when it was their turn, we supported them and we expect no less from them, it’s our turn now.
Secondly, we must show them that we have qualified   men and women to do this job. We must in negotiation and in collaboration come to the most agreeable person, whether man or woman, and speak with one voice. That again is the clincher for us. Once all these things are done, I can assure you, we will produce a governor of Delta State of Anioma extraction. It’s fair and equitable for that to be done, but in a manner devoid of heating the polity and revving up political activities and all that.
