Nigerians have been counselled to derive strength from
the variety of tribes, dialects and cultures in sustaining the corporate
existence of the country, thereby extenuating the virtues of unity in
diversity.
The Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon
Victor Ochei made this clarion call, contained in his celebratory message to
Nigerians on the country’s 53rd independence anniversary.
In the message, the legislator highlighted resilience,
patriotism, mutual tolerance, honesty and ability to shun divisive tendencies
as essential ingredients in attaining societal development, which the country
as a fledgling democracy needs.
He urged further that “as a people, we must-one and
all-renew our faith in our common national project and the brotherhood that
defines the desire for an accomplished nationhood, in spite of our marked
differences in tribe and tongue”.
Hon Ochei also posited that consistency in upholding
these virtues will entrench hope, beget and nourish expectation, and, overtime,
deliver our hearts desire of – enduring positive reality.
The legislator advised Nigerians as well as Deltans
in particular, not to despair, or lament lost opportunities but rather
resolve to work harder, at every turn, on the core values of patience, peaceful
disposition, consistency, honest hard work and reasonable sacrifices for the
overall national good in the short, medium and long terms.
He observed that even as nation building is fraught with
daunting tasks, it behoves citizens to always cherish the fact that upholding
these core values will usher in positive attainments.
