The African adage which says that “a chick that will
become a cock shows early traits of such attainment” came to relevance recently
in Asaba, when Rev. Fr Thomas Treacy, the former Principal of St. Thomas’
College Kano, posited that he foresaw great potentials in one of his former
students Rt Hon (Engr.) Victor Ochei, the Speaker of the Delta State House of
Assembly.
The Irish priest who made this observation during an
unscheduled visit to the Speaker disclosed, that young Victor Ochei as a
student showed great potentials in academic and leadership obligations.
According to him,” he (Hon. Victor Ochei) was fine as a
student academically and behaviourally. I knew that he was going places. I am
happy that he has attained this height in the society, a feat attributable to
the virtues of strictness and forthrightness which we instilled into students
of the institution”.
He said further that wards should not be spared the rod when
necessary as it will help in positively shaping the lives of such students.
In his response, Hon Ochei expressed gratitude to the
instructor, whom he described as a man who always stood for impacting sterling
qualities into student of the institution, adding that “ at that time, we
dreaded him but we later discovered that those virtues were the
foundation of our modest attainments in life”.
