The Delta State Police Command yesterday confirmed that
there was an assassination attempt on the life of Victor Ochei, the speaker of
the state House of Assembly, penultimate Friday at Obomkpa in Aniocha North
Local Government Area of the state.
The state police command that made the confirmation
through its spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Lucky
Uyabeme, also refuted an earlier statement credited to it in an online medium.
Mr Uyabeme, who made this disclosure during an
interactive session with journalists in his office at Asaba, said: “On Friday,
November 1, 2013, the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Victor
Ochei was at Obomkpa in Aniocha North Local Government Area of the state for a
function, and there was an explosion under the chair he was supposed to sit
on.”
He stated further that the mystery the police were trying
to unravel was why local canons were placed under the seat he (Ochei) was to
sit on?
On the earlier on-line report, the police spokesman
averred that he never had any direct or proxy interaction with the reporter.
His words: “I am very surprised to see this publication
by Saharareporters. I don’t even know whether there is Saharareporters’ correspondent
in Delta State. In fact, I only spoke to The Sun newspaper correspondent on the
issue. I, therefore, urge members of the public to disregard the publication as
all what he stated there quoting me were all lies.”
